Candlesticks play a unique and vital role in Judaism. They are used every Shabbat both to bring in the Sabbath day and at its end during the Havdalah (separation) ceremony. They are also on every Jewish festival, most significantly every evening of Chanukah, which is also known as the Festival of Lights. According to tradition, they can be made from any material, but nowadays there is such a range of artistic gifts on offer that we are spoilt for choice. Israeli artists have long specialised in making candlesticks and Bluewhite is delighted to showcase a beautiful range made from wood, aluminium, glass, pewter and Jerusalem stone. All Jewish women light candlesticks from the age of Bat Mitzvah and they make a wonderful, personal gift on this momentous occasion!
Every time candles are lit on Shabbat, a blessing is said: “Blessed are you, O L-rd our G-d, who has sanctified us with His Mitzvot and commanded us to light the Shabbat Candles.”
